Good Smile had tremendous quality control with this figure. Nendoroids are ingenious. They hide a lot of molding seams or have absolutely no seams at all that you can see with the human eye. The joints are always wonderfully hidden and the seamless transition between parts is to die for. This Miku actually came out at the time where Nendoroids were transitioning away from the older style face plate where the joint was actually in the face plate itself to the modern face plate, which can be swapped out without disturbing the joint itself. Nendoroids are often notorious for breaking joints, but this transition was magic for them. It also makes storing the face plates a hundred times easier than their predecessors. The snowflake on her hat is spectacularly done. It is a magnificent piece that suits her perfectly. The wand is also absolutely magnificent. She was only the second of her kind, the only mentionable Snow Miku (one that truly left the original Miku formulae), was Strawberry Snow Miku. The love and care that went into the design of Magical Snow Miku caught my eye. As an artist, I used very similar color choices in other characters, so not only was her design eye-catching, but she made me feel a bit nostalgic. With such a gorgeous and meaningful figure on my mind, I set out to purchase a figure all on my own for the very first time that was not in a store. At the time, I had absolutely no idea what to look out for when trying to purchase a legitimate Nendoroid. It’s actually quite funny, because I had happened to buy her in 2014 and so she was openly available all over the place. Where did I go first and made my purchase from? When I was starry-eyed and my wallet was suddenly empty? Alibaba. Do not purchase your figures from Alibaba. The likelihood that the figure is real is extraordinarily low. You have higher chances on eBay, or other random websites with some version of Japan in their name than Alibaba. In the mail came this awesome box, I opened it all up, and I was thrilled with my purchase. At first. Then I started to become very agitated when I realized that my figure would not stay together. Her arms, legs, and clothing pieces would all fall off. Some pieces did not even fit on her in the first place. She was dirty like someone rolled her in a bit of funk before packaging her. I was ready to get on my high horse and give Good Smile Company a piece of my mind. Luckily there was a very handy article right on Good Smile’s website that I could refer to. Specifically this one and this one. Off my high horse I fell, dirt all over my face, and feeling particularly naughty. I got cheated out of my money and cheated out of what I thought would be my only opportunity to obtain this awesome figure. Imagine my surprise when I walked into my local game shop at the time, located at the slowly dying mall in the heart of Cupertino, California. That look on my face when I walked in, looked around at all of the various figures in boxes, then meandered my way over to a section where I saw the figure of my dreams all compiled together inside of a Ziploc baggie on a clothesline. She had no box, no magic circle, and missing her articulated arm… But she was real. Who cares about missing pieces, bad bootlegs, and all of that when I could finally have her in one form or another. You bet I bought that Ziploc baggie Miku and you are also correct in assuming that she had a much higher price tag than she should have. They really create a satisfying look. The gold paint on the collar of the cape is radiant and not a drop out of place. The gentle gradients are lovely to look at, creating exquisite detail that just can not be replicated well by the bootleg makers. The snowflakes in her hair are just dark enough to stand out and a soft purple highlight to really accentuate it. The color scheme itself is an absolute winner. How? She has a pose that allows her to go baseless. This pose isn’t a trick with her hair, making the articulated arm do some magic to make her look like she is standing, or anything like that. She has a proper sitting pose. You can plop her anywhere in her sitting pose without fear of her falling apart! Scale figures really cannot compete with Figmas and Nendoroids in both the pose and enjoyment categories due to just the number of ways you can have fun with them. These figures are built to be played with and enjoyed. She can stand, wave, use her wand, read some books, hold Yukine, and that is not including interchanging her parts with another figure. Nendoroids were built to be interchangeable and magnificent. The shoes are well done, they have rolls and bulges that make you feel like she is really wearing shoes. They aren’t flat or skin tight. The legs themselves cannot be ignored, these are my favorite part of this figure. The bandaged leg is fabulous, every fold is there and her knees are beautifully defined. A lot of details in the knees and behind the knees could have been lost, but they maintained the quality all the way through. The other thing that I like about her legs is how her socks/bandages interact with her leg. This box is boring. It is a flat square, which a lot of boxes are, but it is made completely out of plastic. This plastic is weak, overly flexible, and easy to scuff. There are many reasons why I dislike plastic boxes (you can read about it in the original article I wrote in MyFigureCollection), or you can wait until I get my figure care blog up and running. Then I will go in excruciating detail on why I dislike full plastic boxes. Now, there is nothing about this box that screams Megumin to me. Sure, the boring triangles in the background somewhat match her color scheme and her name is on it, but that doesn’t make me feel like this box belongs to this awesome character. I understand why a lot of these choices were made and while I do not have a second Pop Up Parade figure yet to compare and contrast against, I would not be surprised if I see this box in future Pop Up Parades with a slightly different color. This base follows a similar formula. It is a flat, semi-transparent, red, hexagon base. What makes this base stand apart from Izumi’s base is the stepped look for one. It may not have a lot of detail, but it does have more detail and the detail that is there is somewhat visually interesting. For two, the vibrant red color is awesome. It looks great in photos and really pops out no matter where in the room she is. Well the end of the cape is awkwardly pushed out. They tried to go for a nice effect, however, it just comes off a bit weird. She also had very apparent mold lines on her arms and hair. Cheap figures mean that corners will be cut. The rim of her hat is a little messy, but over all pretty good. What she is missing is paint that helps define her body shape. This can be little highlights or added dark colors to form shadows. The paint on this figure is mostly flat, but the great sculpting helps to go a long way. The second point was deducted because of the possibility of paint transfer. This paint transfer can come from the hat (which is removable) and the staff or staff hand. Extra markings on the staff is a big no no. She did it when she first introduced herself and then we pretty much never saw it again. When I purchase a Megumin figure, you know I am looking for one thing: Explosions. There are tons of figures that do have an explosion pose. It did not have to include the explosion, but the lack of explosion intent makes me feel like this almost isn’t Megumin. The pose did score rather high because it isn’t a totally out of character pose, which I have seen on a startling number of Megumin figures. If you’re wondering why, it’s because her staff hand is incredibly soft. The staff isn’t actually attached to the hand, you need to place it in her hand. So when the figure is this soft, the staff can drop right out of her hand and clatter onto the ground/surface. That’s a huge no no. I do not condone possible figure damage. What I do love about her staff is that it is gorgeously detailed. The small peg that holds the ball in the center of the staff is often hardly noticeable. Well done! Her body also has soft ripples all over the surface. You took what you could get back then. What you could get was often not a lot, so I am very happy with what was given to me in this figure. Today this figure would have accented the apron with gray-blue shadows, but they made the conscious decision to go with an awkwardly bright purple. It looks a bit weird when you can see it, so I try to not think about it too much. This figure does have a really nice matte to glossy ratio on the finish. She’s glossy on the socks and shoes, but matte on her body, face, and hair.
